Berg and I received an invitation from our friend for the Grand Opening of Kopi Roti in Cebu. We don’t know if she owned the place because she wouldn’t tell us when we asked her. I wasn’t so sure in attending either. My “vegan-ish” friend Jon sent me a message that he’ll be at Kopi Roti as early as 5:30 pm. I guess everyone from our group is going to Kopi Roti so I guess I have to go.
I was not expecting anything grand because after all Kopi Roti is a coffee shop and not another restaurant in Cebu. But WOW! Bonggang opening pala diri sa Kopi Roti. Pakal diay ning akong adtoan, as in catering to the max. Magsinaw nasad akong ngabil ini sa lechon dah. It was a treat for me because it was a festival of the bidli and the ngilngig that I love – Lechon, lechon kawali, pork asado, lasagna, and others. Kung pwede sana yung kinain ko nalang yung e-review eh at hindi nalang menu ng Kopi Roti hehehe…
So moving on to the review of Kopi Roti’s menu…
————————————————————————————————————————————–
ICED TEA TARIK - Milk tea with a twist, a tea of Indian origin prepared by quickly transferring tea from one mug to another to create froth and aroma.

Fedge: So Love, what can you say about Kopi Roti’s Iced Tea Tarik? Is it overrated?
Lovener: No, its not.
Fedge: Dili ka ganahan?
Berg: Luod? Luod?
Lovener: No, mura cya ug tsa.
Berg: (not hearing it correctly) Mura cya ug unsa?
Fedge: Diba ang tsa Love kay tea man na noh?
Lovener: Yah… mura lagi cya ug naay tsa na…
Fedge: Wala diay ka na briefing daan nga tea na cya?!?!
Berg: (laughing)
Lovener: No, it’s.. it’s.. it’s.. it’s not… ahhmmm… kanang… there is no difference at all.
Berg: From?
Lovener: Nothing unique or special
Berg & Fedge: Compared sa asa?
Lovener: Chowking nga naay tsa
Berg & Fedge: Hah? OKEYYY!!!
Berg: Hala ka! Guest blogger nga bad review
Fedge: I-off nani naku recording oi
Berg: Lagi i-ban nata diri sa Kopi Roti
FEDGE: I like this drink very much. For somebody who is not into tea, they might not appreciate this. But for someone like me who is into tea and milk, this is the perfect combination. It is quite an interesting drink. On your first sip you can only taste the tea. But after a while, the milky and somewhat chocolaty taste comes alive. It’s like one-hell-of-a-drink from Kopi Roti! Highly recommended!
Shel: I totally agree with Fedge on this one. I went to Kopi Roti in a separate occassion, and my companions loved the tea there. I’ve tried both hot and cold, and they taste good to me. I’m not a tea person myself , but I like this tea a lot maybe because it’s not instant. Kopi Roti also has this cold coffee with jelly in it that tastes okay too.
————————————————————————————————————————————-
SOFT BOILED EGGS - perfectly soft-boiled egg in special soya sauce and white pepper.
Berg: Unsa mani? (confused and laughing) Naa ni? Toyo ni? (laughing)
Fedge: Yah
Berg: Toyo ni? Sure ka?
Fedge: O lagi! Black soya.. nakabutang gani na sa Kopi Roti flyer oh
Berg: Hala! Hehehe… ahmmm tingala ko kay abi naku mura cya ug taho. Toyo gyud diay..
Fedge: Yah
Berg: Hala kadaghan sa toyo? Pero may dating sad cya.. Tastes great! Dili cya luod..
Fedge: Bitaw kay murag kapila gud ka nihungit! Murag ang French Toast kausa raka ni bite…
Berg: Alangan ge-picturan paman nimo… kani ge picturan na nimo?
Fedge: Ang egg wala na nimo undangi… luod man cya picturan hehehehe
Lovener: Abi naku kuan… kanang taho cya ang sauce…
Berg: Kay mura cya ug taho noh? Mao sad expect naku kay tungod sa similarity sa texture and color and what seems to be the… but no you can taste the Datu or the Silver Swan hehehe …

- FEDGE: I’m not so crazy about Kopi Roti’s Soft-boiled Eggs. Wala ra ko nalingaw. I like it but I’m not jumping up and down on this. It’s simply your egg with toyo. Maybe it was not soft-boiled perfectly for me. This is something worth exploring though on your visit to Kopi Roti.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
HOME MADE HOT BARLEY – a caffeine-free, pandan flavored refreshing drink for the health buffs.

Berg: I’m scared…
Fedge: Hah?
Berg: I don’t wanna take it because it smells funny. Mura cya ug labakara nga natagak hahaha. Mura cya ug natagak nga linapwaan nga labakara bah..
Lovener: Berg murag dapat na nimo i-mix
Fedge: Yah kay naa kunoy nag settle2x sa bottom
Berg: Unsa kahay gebutang ani noh? Mura mani cya ug puro sugar (smells it after stirring)
Fedge: Pasimhota gud ko anang imong ge-ingon nga murag labakara beh (smells the drink)
Berg: Mao gyud?
Fedge: Hehehe … bati cya ug baho…
Berg: Hahay mga ignorante man cguro ta nga mga reviewer hehehe
Fedge: Oi inuma na kuno na imong imong kuan
Berg: Okey here it goes… (after sipping it) Hala it tastes familiar… Murag labakara hahaha
Fedge & Lovener laughing
Fedge: So unsa man gyud cya Berg?
Lovener: Bitaw cge describe
Fedge: Unsa man cya sweet?
Berg: Kana gani mag cook ka ug rice…
Fedge: Kanang kinilisan?
Berg: Hehehehe… Mao na mahuna-hunaan naku..
Fedge: Hoi i-describe nana oi mahurot nalang na, ganahan ka or dili?
Berg: Dili ko maka describe… mao rato akong mahunahunaan nga kinilisan
Fedge: (Sips the warm barley) Hoy hala ganahan ko, kuan mani Berg… unya ra ha… Asa man ko nakatilaw ani oi..
Berg: Familiar lagi… kinilisan… hehehe
Fedge: (thinking)
Berg: Ai sa beer cguro.. mao na familiar
Fedge: Dili, pero lami man, asa man gyud ko katilaw ug ingon ani ha… Confused ko if dili ba cya murag puro lng sugar pero ambot ganahan ra man ko, ikaw di ka ganahan?
Berg: Hmmm okay lang.
Fedge: Would you recommend it?
Berg: Try it once basin maganahan, pero it’s not the type nga, hala mo order ko ani sunod, dili cya ingon ana…
————————————————————————————————————————————–
ROTI FRENCH TOAST - like your ordinary French Toast but served with Kaya spread.

Berg: I love French toast. I don’t like the kaya spread because it is lubi. I’m not a coconut person, but I think daghan ganahan ani niya especially Filipinos because of the coconut.
Fedge: I love Kopi Roti’s kaya spread. I’m thinking about it man gani while writing this. But I’m not so satisfied with the toast because I want my French toast to be smothered with egg hehehe.
Shel: This is just so-so for me. This toast would suit anyone who likes their bread not to be too sweet. Kopi Roti has this other bread with kaya spread and butter that tastes really nice. Ingana siya kalami na nakalimut ko sa iyang name
————————————————————————————————————————————–
KOPI BUN - Kopi Roti’s specialty, soft bread with coffee-flavored crust and sweet buttery filling
Fedge: I was not able to taste this on the same day as the opening of Kopi Roti. The one I tasted was already cold because it was a take out the day before. Even if it was cold, I liked it very much! I like the coffee flavor and the butter filling. It was just perfect for me. I am so looking forward to eating this warm and fresh at Kopi Roti!
Shel: Totally agree with you Fedge. My parents liked this bread very much. Highly recommended.
————————————————————————————————————————————–
REVIEW WRAP-UP
Fedge: Overall there is something for you in Kopi Roti. It may be weird in its appearance or taste, but it’s unique and interesting.
Berg: Payts ang price sa Kopi Roti considering the place is something uhhmm medyo ambiancy-ambiancy.
So in closing this review, I am leaving you with people’s reaction to Kopi Roti. Enjoy and try it out! Oki?!

first: how come my pic is posted without my permission? and ngano lahi mn color sa akong pic? ila bea and gilbert ky red2x, ako ky white! proper white balance please??? hmpf
second: remember the comment i made last Sunday about ur reviews, i take that back…this review is fun, well-composed, and i like the flow. Bravo jeff! Two things though: 1. i agree with shirly about the intro and the lechon thing. 2. And i didnt see any mention of the price…i think that pricing is one of Kopi’s advantages, an edge over Starbucks and etc.
third: i love the eggs! though i didnt know that it’s best with bread. i should try that next time. thanks for the info. the tea tarik for me was ok, i agree with Lovener, it tastes like…tea. hehehehe. the french toast is ok ( i like my french sweet and creamy). the kopi bun is so-so too. i love the place and the service.
October 27th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
@jon
issue#1: without permission? or ni reklamo ka kay isa lang ang gi-post? hehehe… sagi lng gud fierce btw ka diha! Hmmm that was way before the WB consciousness…
issue#2: the intro is made to build up the story… and for other reasons naa na cyay gamit diha in the blog’s future hehe… for the prices cge gud point! i’ll find time to scan their menu… i think very attractive and competitive ilang prices… hala mao cguro noh nga kusog na kaayo ang Kopi Roti Cebu tungod aning blog! hahaha…
issue#3: lagi kailangan gyd ko mobalik to try the eggs… i like raw eggs man :p Lami mn ang Kopi bun oi… for me its still better than the Choco bun

November 12th, 2008 at 10:07 pm
halu fejing!
kopi roti?
this sounds like the breakfast I had when I was in an Indian restaurant in Penang, Malaysia…one of the delicious foods i’ve tasted while i was there…the tarik i had there was paired with na’an (it’s their bread with egg) coupled with a spicy curry sauce…do they have “nan” in kopi roti?
that i must try again!
November 12th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
@sheryl:
To the best of my knowledge, Kopi Roti started in Singapore.. but it has strong Malay influence.
Roti, Nan, and bread should mean the same but used differently lng for different countries. Your “roti” experience is typical Indian kay their bread is soft. Parehas na sa gi serve sa Spice Fusion nga Roti and Roti special (w/ egg) kay it comes with a spicy curry sauce nga super lami!
Kopi Roti’s bread and also their specialty is the Kopi Bun. Must try gyud na She!
December 6th, 2008 at 11:48 pm
hi peeps! i dont know what to say..nashock ko nga ang conversation namo naa gyud…but anyways, the tarik was ok…but i was expecting something not common..similar ra man gud sya sa nai cha sa chowking..though considering the place and the price, kopi roti is definitely a place to visit…especially ilang kopi roti buns!! daghan gyud ko ug nakaon. and my officemates were so excited when i told dem nga naa nay kopi roti here in cebu. they were raving about it and we talked bout it the whole day. hehe i even recommended kopi roti kng naa mi coffee sessions with our clients.
December 7th, 2008 at 10:43 am
@lilo: wow thanks sa comment ha, considering “you don’t know what to say” pa anah… that was quite a mouthful… hehehe… kopi roti definitely comes highly recommended

Hope these tastes like the one in Singapore (kopi ‘o’ and soft boiled eggs). So miss it… Would love to visit the place soon…
March 20th, 2009 at 7:39 pm
There is an actual place in Singapore that’s of the same name. It’s just near the MRT station in Jurong East. And I love the soft boiled eggs that was served in Ah Meng Restaurant. Kaya jam on toasted bread also goes well with Kopi-O. Can’t wait to visit this place in Mabolo.
