Breaking Another Dawn with Alberto’s Pizza

Alberto's Pizza Restaurant in Cebu Philippines

Yes, guys!  The Pakalistas once again visited Alberto’s Pizza in Cebu after a very long Saturday that we had.

What was the itinerary?  Berg, Jon, and I were to meet and discuss some “photography” stuff at Golden Cowrie in Lahug and then supposed to hear a short seminar on photography and editing at the iCenter.

But when things don’t go as planned, the plans change.  Obviously!  So other people got invited, I received invites from other people, which led us to watch Confessions of a Shopaholic at Ayala Cebu, had desserts at Dessert Factory while waiting for Lovener (the Kopi Roti & Andok’s girl) , and had dinner with balikbayan friend Charles and longtime-no-see friend Marlon at Roma Mia.

After all of that, it was finally time to relax and unwind.  We went to One Mango Place, the Coolest Place to Be (hehehe if you’re somewhat on a budget).  We always end up at Handuraw or Xiamen because Yo.U is always full.  After hearing boring stories from Lovener about work we kinda got hungry.

We were supposed to eat at this cool pocherohan but it was not to Berg’s liking.  So when everything else closes up, Alberto’s Pizza in Cebu saves the day! or the dawn…

Alberto’s Pizza Cebu: Chicken Garlic

Sliced chicked hotdog, minced garlic, red tomato, and sliced onions

Alberto's Pizza Restaurant in Cebu Philippines - Garlic Chicken

Alberto’s Garlic Chicken Pizza is simple and clean (I mean no clashing colors hehe).  I can taste the chicken scattered all over but not much of the garlic.  The onions brought more personality to the pizza than the garlic.  Although this is a good pizza, I can definitely taste the “home-madeness” of this pizza because of the presence of the chicken hotdogs.

Alberto’s Pizza Cebu: Diavolos’

Hot & spicy ground beef, onions, bacon, pepperoni, and red bell pepper

Alberto's Pizza in Cebu Philippines - Diavolos

Alberto’s Diavolos’ Pizza for me is better than the Chicken Garlic because it is loaded with ginaling (ground beef), it was really spicy to be fair with, and just like the garlic chicken pizza it is full of onions (which I like!).

Pakalista Verdict

Alberto’s Pizza is still the most affordable pizza here in Cebu.  It has that home-made feel and taste that Pakalista Berg loved but something I like but not overly so.

If you ask me which one I like better Calda Pizza or Alberto’s Pizza, I’d choose the former over the latter because of that “less-homemade-feel” reason, and I am just simply amazed at Calda Pizza’s huge sizes!

P.S. Just some info when you order a 1.5 liter softdrink.  They will still charge you Php 1.00 for the plastic cup with ice.  I am not making a bigg fuss about it, but I’m just letting you know… or na shock lang gyud mi kay wa man gud mi kwarta then naa pa diay additional bayronon hehehe…

CEBU CITY — Nine nursing students and a teacher were rushed to Cebu City Medical Center (CCMC) Tuesday dawn after complaining of vomiting and diarrhea.
The incident happened hours after the students and the teacher reportedly ate pizza with stale meat.

Alberto’s Pizza along B. Rodriguez St. in this city may face temporary closure until it can comply with all requirements and correct the deficiencies that sanitary inspectors saw during their initial investigation Tuesday morning.

Its four other branches in this city — Colon, Pelaez St., Paseo in Mabolo and M. Velez St. — will be inspected Wednesday.

Six of the food poisoning victims remain confined at the city hospital as of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday but are already in stable condition, said Durinda Macasocol, chief of the City Epidemiology Statistics and Surveillance Unit of the City Health Department (CHD).

The food poisoning victims who were admitted at CCMC are Caryl Loquero, 20; Junersa Abellanosa, 21; Fatima Retchel Tacoloy, 22; and Grace May Ann Domingo, 21, all of Cebu City.

Ratsen Rey Dejos, 22, of Minglanilla and Jobelle Jimenez, 22, of Talisay City were also admitted.

Their two classmates and clinical instructor were released immediately after examination at the Outpatient Department.

CHD’s sanitary inspectors said the food poisoning could be blamed on the spoiled ground beef on the pizza that the students ordered and ate at the pizza parlor past 1 a.m. Tuesday.

Three hours later, the students and their clinical instructor started to feel stomach pains, and were already vomiting and having diarrhea.

“Our sanitary inspectors already visited the pizzeria and they saw several discrepancies in terms of sanitation. The initial finding is that the beef was already spoiled, and even the owner admitted that, but it still has to be confirmed by lab tests. Most probably, we will recommend temporary closure until they can comply with the requirements,” Macasocol said in a phone interview.

“Naay set sa beef namo na nadaot but we cannot tell for sure if that is really the cause of their illness. We already checked with CCMC and they said the stool exam is negative. We will wait for the results of the lab test and the official results from the CHD before we release any comment,” Syne Kiamko, owner of the pizzeria, told Sun.Star Cebu.

Aside from having an unsanitary working area in the kitchen, the pizzeria known for its affordable thin crust pizzas also had unsanitary storage areas for their food supplies, the inspectors reported.

They also observed the poor food handling by its food attendants, who also did not have health cards issued by the CHD.

Another patient was reportedly rushed to Velez General Hospital Tuesday after eating Alberto’s Pizza, but Kiamko said they are still verifying the information.

He declined from commenting further on the incident when interviewed Tuesday night, but said they will wait for the results of the laboratory exams.

The CHD took food samples Tuesday and had them examined. The results are expected to be released Wednesday.

City Councilor Gerardo Carillo, chairman of the Cebu City Disaster Coordinating Council (CCDCC), said the other branches of Alberto’s Pizza will also be inspected Wednesday since all their food supplies come from one commissary.(LCR/Sun.Star Cebu

they should check the bathroom at the b.rodriguez branch coz its just horrible!! i admit i have eaten there about 3-4 times and there pizza was pretty good but when i went to the bathroom i was shock. lol
they should change it from albertos to al.DIRT.tos hahahahah joke lang….

  5. berg Says:

haha i was already expecting something like that to happen to this particular place sometime soon but egads it happened too soon. good thing we had another go at the place before it faced temporarily closure… i’ll have to fulfill my pizza cravings elsewhere while this thing gets sorted out… might try amico’s, or maybe the italian job… haven’t tried those two yet.

  6. Shel Says:

But diba different man daw owners sa Alberto’s na franchises, or was it naay Alberto’s and naa Alberto lang? If my grapevine is correct, the partners of the orig branch split up. So maybe the other branches are not plagued with the same problem, but this is really damaging for them still and should serve as an example to the sprouting pizza places in Cebu.

@Berg – We will have an Amico’s review soon (once I get the photos done) hehe. Okay lang pud siya :-) Oist I think I just found a Yummy’s pizza in Lahug haha.

  7. Fedge Says:

Hi Guys, I’ve known about this incident since Wednesday but didn’t comment on the issue because I am deeply affected by it. Char!

This is really bad for Alberto’s Pizza. Correct me if I’m wrong, they estimated a 7-digit-figure loss for the duration of the closure and I think that is for just one branch alone.

Alberto’s Pizza really have sanitation issues. When anyone steps into the B. Rodriguez branch you know what you’re getting into. Updates report that other branches will be closed down for failing the sanitary inspection and operating without business permit.

But I think it was a bit unfair for Alberto’s Pizza to be blamed for the incident. The lab result was negative of anything that can be traced to the pizza. Among the thousands of pizzas that were sold that day, only that batch had problems?

I am saying this without any disrespect to them (the victims). The first time I ate a Calda Pizza I also experienced severe LBM. But was that because of food poisoning? I think that was just because I ate too much. Just a thought! :) Just breaking the seriousness of the matter here.

I think there should be another reason. It was just too bad that Alberto’s Pizza was the common food they ate that day. With that and the very evident sanitation issues of the place, everything just made sense and increased the probability.

They should have hired a Quality Assurance & Quality Control analyst. Ahem ahem… I accept freelance jobs lol
